故事 Story
老王家的房子出租给了一个外国客人。一天,那个客人打电话给老王,用一口不太流利的中文说道:"王先生,家里的液化气快没了,能不能帮我加一下?"
Mr. Wang rented his house to a foreigner whose Chinese was not so good. One day the foreigner called him: "Mr. Wang, the liquefied gas in my house is in shortage. Would you please ask someone to add some for me?"
老王非常担心给这位客人带来不便,于是立刻问:"布朗先生,那你现在断气了没有?"话一出口,老王就觉得不对劲儿,好在对方并没有意识到,回答说:"现在还没断气,估计三天之内会断气的。"
Mr. Wang worried that it might cause some inconvenience to his tenant and he asked him immediately: "Mr. Brown, 那你现在断气了没有 (Nà nǐ xiànzài duànqì le méiyǒu) (has the gas been used up already)?" No sooner had the words come out of his mouth than he realized there was something wrong with this sentence. Luckily Mr. Brown didn't realize it and answered: "现在还没断气(xiànzài hái méiyǒu duànqì) (the gas hasn't been used up now), but it will be exhausted in three days."

断气
"断"是一个动词,意思是"中断,停止"。在本短文中,根据上下文的意思,"气"是指"天然气",老王和外国客人的本意都是指"断天然气"(the gas is cut off),即老王家里的天然气快要中断了。然而,"断气"合在一起,还有另外的一层意思,即"停止呼吸"(breathe one's last)。例如:
In Chinese "断(duàn)" is a verb which means "to cease or cut off". In this short passage, "气(qì)" refers to liquefied petroleum gas. Both Mr. Wang and the foreign tenant want to express that the gas is used up, but when "断(duàn)" and "气(qì)" are put together they carry a new meaning — "to breathe one's last". For example:
1. 他父亲今天上午断气了。
His father breathed his last this morning.
2. 那位老人还没等到他的孙子就断气了。
The old man had breathed his last before his grandson hurried home.
