机会成本是指占用资源的代价，亦即资源另作他用所能取得的最高效益。此一概念强调凡事均有代价，资源一旦用于某一用途，势必牺牲了其他的选择，因此，资源必须慎用以取得最佳效益。

The cost of using a resource, i.e. its actual cost plus the profit forgone by not putting it to another use. For example, the purchase price of a city-centre garden might be $100,000 and the profit forgone by not building an office block on it might be $1.0 million, making its total opportunity cost $1.1 million.
