Two days before Nintendo Co. shows off its new Wii U console at the videogame industry's big annual conference, the company gave a taste of what we can expect from the new machine.

The new controller, which has a 6.2-inch touchscreen with motion sensors and a built-in camera, is going to carry the name Wii U GamePad, a nod to what Nintendo fans called the 'game pad' controllers for the original Nintendo Entertainment System introduced in the 1980s when a flat directional key replaced the more common joystick of the era.

Building on the 'Mii' avatars--a cartoon self-image that users could create on the Wii and the Nintendo 3DS handheld--the Wii U will create a 'Miiverse' (a word combining Mii and universe) of users including friends, family and fellow countrymen to foster online discussion about games.

In one demonstration, the video displays one gamer asking fellow players how to beat a certain level on a game. From there, two users engage in a video conference using the cameras on the Wii U controller. Iwata says he hopes such features will create a sense of 'empathy' among Wii U users.
