Two new releases knocked 'The Hunger Games' off its pedestal at the box office this past weekend, ending the dystopian drama's four-week reign at No. 1.

The movie, which the studio says was made for between $12 million and $13 million, features a largely African-American ensemble cast and is based on Steve Harvey's advice book 'Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man.' It played strongly to its core audience of 18 to 49-year-old African Americans. Overall, the film appealed primarily to women, who made up 63% of the audience, and those over the age of 30, who made up 62% of the audience.

Mr. Harvey featured several cast members on his morning radio show and the studio promoted the film to radio DJs and fraternities at historically black colleges and universities. The studio also secured partnerships with television networks including BET and TNT and leveraged its large cast's 40 million-plus social media connections through Facebook, Twitter and other channels.

'The Lucky One,' a romantic drama starring Zac Efron as a returning soldier, grossed $22.8 million from 3,155 locations. Released by Time Warner Inc.'s TWX +0.80%Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is based on Nicholas Sparks's novel by the same name and appealed primarily to women, who made up 76% of the audience.

According to Warner Bros. President of Domestic Distribution Dan Fellman, Mr. Efron was the main draw, with 57% of audience members citing the young actor as their primary reason for wanting to see the movie.

LGF -0.83%has cumulatively racked up $356.9 million in domestic ticket sales thus far, making it the 19th highest-grossing domestic film of all time.
