international star on Monday when it was announced that Nicolas Anelka, the Chelsea and former French national striker, would join the Chinese Super League team, Shanghai Shenhua.

Mr. Anelka, who is 32 years old and has also played for Arsenal, Liverpool, and Real Madrid, will join Shenhua in January on a two-year contract, the club said in a brief statement on its website.

The statement didn't give further details, and a
spokesman didn't answer calls seeking comment. Chelsea said in a statement on its website that it had agreed to terms with Shenhua for Mr. Anelka's
permanenttransfer in January, without giving further details. Chinese media have reported that the deal could earn Mr. Anelka some $300,000 a week
