From a distance, the five-million-rupee shirt ($ 97,500) looks fairly modest, but a closer look reveals that its buttons are diamonds set on gold.

The shirt is part of a new range designed by Amitabh Chandel with the aim of reviving a particularly opulent aspect of Indian heritage. At the same time, he wanted create clothes that were 'practical' and that did not 'look too gaudy.' Mr. Chandel, a former member of the ruling Congress party's youth branch, has been designing clothes for himself and for his family for a few years now, but this is the first time he is selling to the public.

The shirt, available in silk or cotton, is hand-stitched by tailors in Lucknow, a city in India's state of Uttar Pradesh known for its fine embroidery. But the cost really comes down to the diamonds.
