Mobile firms are now turning to squeeze more revenue from the customers and networks they have already established.
They are making a string of ideas to persuade customers to spend more money - including the most bizarre 3G slippers.
Not only comfortable, each 3G slipper has an "accelerometer" inside - which detects when the wearer has fallen over. Then a designated member of the family gets a text saying there is a problem and their location.
The slippers cost around £63 and the plan is to offer the service for about £17 per month.
The 3G slippers have attracted investment from Verizon and a trial at AT&T, two of the largest mobile phone companies in the US.
