Questions 14~17:
Winter driving is dangerous because it is so difficult to know what is going to happen and accidents take place so easily.Ice might be hiding beneath the melting snow, waiting to send you off the road. The car coming towards you may suddenly slide across the road.
Rule Number One for driving on icy roads is to drive smoothly. Uneven movements can suddenly make a car very difficult to control. So every time you turn the wheel, touch the brakes or increase your speed, you must be as gentle and slow as possible. Imagine you are driving with a full cup of hot coffee on the seat next to you. Drive so that you would not spill it.
Rule Number Two is to pay attention to what might happen. The more ice there is,the farther down the road you have to look. Test how long it takes to stop by
gently braking. Remember that you may be driving more quickly than you think.
In general,double your
normal stopping distance when the road is wet, three times this distance on snow, and even more on ice. Try to stay in control of your car at all times and you will avoid trouble.
Questions 18~21:
All the housewives who went to the supermarket had one great ambition:to be the lucky
customer who did not have to pay for her shopping. For this was what the notice just inside the entrance promised. It said:"Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free groceries. This may be your lucky day!"
For several weeks Mrs.Edwards hoped, like many of her friends ,to be the lucky customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hope. The cupboards in her kitchen were full of things, which she did not need. In vain her husband tried to dissuade her. She dreamed of the day when the
manager of the supermarket would approach her and say:"Madam, this is your lucky day. Everything in your basket is free."
One Friday morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken it to her car,she found that she had forgotten to buy tea. She dashed back to the supermarket, got the tea and went towards the cash desk. As she did so,she saw the
manager of the supermarket approach her."Madam,"he said, holding out his hand,"I want to
congratulate you!You are the lucky
customer and everything in your basket is free!"
Questions 22~25:
M:Have you ever visited a redwood forest?I really think I should because of the Muir Woods National Monument north of San Francisco.
W:I've never seen a redwood tree.I really can't imagine how big they are.
W:The dictionary says they're the tallest living things. Some are more than one hundred and six meters high. But none of the trees in Muir Woods is that tall. You have to go further north in California to see the tallest trees.
W:You said that Muir Woods is near San Francisco?I guess it must be quite a
tourist attraction.
M:Yes,it's less than an hour's drive away. It's easy to get to.
W:I've heard that many redwood trees are thousands of years old.Are the ones in Muir Woods that old?
M:The oldest documented age for a coastal redwood tree is more than two thousand years. The trees in Muir Woods are 400 to 800 years old.
W:Why do they
survive so long?
M:They have
remarkableresistance to forest fires.Their tough, thick bark protects the trees during a fire. The coastal redwoods also like a damp, foggy climate.
W:Well then, since Muir Woods is near foggy San Francisco,it must be ideal for the trees'survival.I can't wait to go there and see them.
