On Sunday, as the nation's attention turns to New York to remember the devastation of Sept. 11, 2011, Lois Eida is heading to the beach.

Ms. Eida, 62 years old, and her husband Isaac, 64, decided months ago to travel this weekend to the Long Island beach house they took refuge in after Sept. 11, 2001. The collapse of the World Trade Center coated their Battery Park City apartment with toxic dust and kept them away from home for three months.

The Eidas are among a number of New Yorkers who experienced Sept. 11 first-hand and are deliberatelytrying to tune out all mention of the day and the events marking its 10th anniversary on Sunday.

'New Yorkers saw it as an attack on their city, and therefore, their identity.'
