The Sudden Enlightenment (Poem One)
With lofty ambitions I started my youth,
Bewildered by Tao's Drinking though I had learnt,
Until having experienced the adult world,
Was I finally enlightened by the poem.
Notes: Tao Yuanming (born 365-died 427), styling himself Yuanliang and also known as Sir Wuliu and Sir Jingjie as the posthumous title, changed his name to Qian when he moved to Liusong. He was a poet, literati, specialist in Cifu (a combination of prose and poetry) and proser in late East Jin Dynasty and early Song Dynasty of the Southern Dynasties. Tao's family originated in Chaisang of Xunyang in East Jin Dynasty. For a short period of time, he served as a small official in the government, but resigned later and returned home. Ever since then, Tao led a quiet life as a hermit. The rural life was the main theme of Tao's poems. Drinking, Return to My Rural Life, The Story of the Peach Blossom Valley, The Biography of Sir Wuliu, The Ci of My Return, and The Poem of the Peach Blossom Valley, are all his pieces of work relating to this theme.

Family feud and national enmity mixed in Wu Zixu's story.
A hero he remained despite three years of revenge.
Why King of Wu treated him in such a way,
Awaits the comments of later generations.
