'Paranormal Activity 2' took the top slot at the weekend box office.

Paramount's supernatural horror film brought in $41.5 million at the domestic box office, according to early estimates from Hollywood.com. That was a much bigger splash than most experts had expected.

The stunt comedy 'Jackass 3-D' (Paramount) took in $21.6 million for the second spot.

'Red' (Summit) an action comedy with Bruce Willis, grossed $15 million for third place.

'Hereafter' (Warner Bros.) a supernatural drama directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon, took in $12 million for fourth place as it expanded from limited release.

'The Social Network' (Sony) continued to pull in audiences with $7.3 million for fifth place.

'Conventional box office wisdom would tell us that the 'magic' and fun of discovering the first installment would be a one-time only deal,' said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office division of Hollywood.com. 'However, with a much bigger than expected debut, 'Paranormal Activity 2' has proven that lightning can strike twice and that audiences can't get enough of this type of horror movie experience.'

Final figures are due out on Monday.
