Ford Motor Co.'s pending sale of Volvo Cars to China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. is sparking leadership changes across several auto companies.

Geely said that its chairman, Li Shufu, will become board chairman at Volvo after the sale. Hans-Olov Olsson, a former president and chief executive at Volvo, will serve as vice chair.

Under the new leadership, the Swedish car maker plans to keep its headquarters in Gothenburg and presence in Europe and North America while expanding its operations in China. Unprofitable Volvo has been struggling in recent years, with its U.S. sales dropping 5.2% in the first six months of the year compared with a year earlier.

A person familiar with the matter said that Ford specifically told Geely that Mr. Odell would be staying at Ford.
