   Warm up by making sentences

   Hi, class. We take Unit 2 today. Look at the title "It's still read and loved." Now let's study the form of the sentence. It (subject)'s still read and loved (predicate).

   Now let's try to make as many such sentences as possible.

   1. Her homework is still done by her brother.

   2. The television is still watched by the students.

   3. The teacher's interview with the students' parents is seen by all.

   4. A class magazine is started by the class monitor.

   5. My ideas are written down here.

   6. A diary is still written of the school events by me.

   7. She is still told by her brother about her mother's health.

   8. An interview with the famous scientist is done this morning in the meeting room.

   9. Good grades are still gotten by us all.

   10. A composition is written by the newcomer in my class.

   11. Her life is still read about by her students.

   12. The baby is still looked carefully over by the us three.

   13. The book is put at the bottom of the box.

   14. The top of the tree is reached by all four boys.

   15. The river is looked across to by the man on the other side of the river.

   16. He is brought from the countryside in the west of the city.

   On page 12 in the box is an article called The Adventure of Tom Sawyer. Now let's go on to read it. While reading, try to: cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study the predicative, darken the connectives and underline all the useful expressions. (阅读过程中,断开/意群,观察谓语构成,圈出连词,摘录短语搭配。)

   ■Group the sentences into different groups

   Type 1. He is a teacher. He looks like a teacher. 主语+系动词+表语

   1. Here is our monthly article on a favourite great book.

   2. This month, our guest writer is Mr Jackson.

   3. My favourite great book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.

   4. He's a lively and clever young boy.

   5. With Becky he gets lost in a cave, and finally, they find a box of gold.

   6. My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead.

   7. Everyone is surprised to see him but they' re also pleased to see him alive.

   8. Tom is the hero of the story.

   9. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him.

   10. Becky is pretty with fair hair, Joe is Tom's best friend, and Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.

   11. The themes of the story are to do with children growing up and becoming more serious.

   12. Tom Sawyer is a great book.

   13. It's only a story.

   14. So it sounds very real.

   Type 2. He runs. 主语+不及物动词

   1. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in the quiet streets of St Petersburg, Missouri.

   2. He runs away with his two friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days.

   3. With Huck he goes looking for treasure.

   4. He hides and watches for a time, and then suddenly he appears.

   5. It talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behaviour.

   Type 3. He writes books. 主语+及物动词+宾语

   1. Everyone thinks Tom is dead.

   2. He decides to go to his own funeral.

   3. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America.

   4. Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behaviour.

   5. Why do I think Tom Sawyer is a great book?

   6. Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876.

   7. But it's still read and loved by people all over the world today.

   8. Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century.

   9. Today it's thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature.

   10. Read it! I know you'll enjoy it, too.

   Type 4. He teaches us English. 主语+及物动词+间接宾语+直接宾语

   Type 5. He makes us happy. 主语+及物动词+宾语+宾语补足语

   Type 6. There is a book on the table. 谓语(there be)+主语+状语

   But there are other important characters.

   ■Draw a diagram and retell the text (图解课文,复述课文)

   Now we shall read the text once more to draw a diagram of it. We shall then retell the text with the help of the diagram.

   ■Close down by writing as they do. (仿写)

   We are to do something interesting. To write as they do. That is, we shall try to write an article similar to the one we read just now.

   Tom Saywer lives with his Aunt Polly in Hanibal, Missouri. The story tells about his daily life, like going to school, and falling in love with his classmate Becky Thatcher. It also tells of his adventures with his friends. One time Tom, his friend Huckleberry Finn, and another friend run away from home to play pirates on the Mississippi River. Near the end of the story Tom gets lost in a cave, where he finds a hidden treasure that makes Tom and Huck rich.
