Top-seeded world number-one tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland has defeated American Andy Roddick to get his third straight4 Wimbledon championship5 at the All-England Club near London. The 23-year-old Federer played nearly flawless6 tennis, as he defeated the second-seeded Roddick 6-2, 7-6, 6-4. With the win, Federer joins Pete Sampras of the United States and Bjorn Borg of Sweden as the only men since 1936 to win three consecutive7 Wimbledon crowns.

Federer says he thought he played well, but was having trouble accepting the fact of winning his third straight title at the All-England Club.

Federer has won 36 consecutive matches on grass. It was his 21st consecutive victory in a tournament final and improved his record to 5-0 in Grand Slam title matches. Federer now leads Roddick 9-1 in their face-to-face games. It was also the third straight year the Swiss star has beaten the 22-year-old Roddick on the way to the title. Roddick says he does not know what else he could have done to beat Federer.

Roger Federer was born on August 8th 1981 in Basel8, Switzerland and started playing tennis at age eight. He achieved outstanding9 results in the juniors, ending as No.1 in the world in 1998. He turned Pro that same year, and was No. 1 in Switzerland in 2001. Unfortunately, he missed six weeks in 2001 due to an injury, yet won his first ATP10 title in Milan. He continued to progress despite injuries but he was unable to show his full talent until 2003, when he finally won a Grand Slam title with a stunning11 victory over Mark Philippoussis, earning at last attention from the public beyond his home country.

What Roddick Says About Federer

-He's probably as close as anyone has been unbeatable. I feel like I played decent12 and the stats13 are decent, and I got straight-setted14. I'm not going to sit around15 and sulk16 and cry. I did everything I could.

-He's the most physicallygifted I've played against. But he's become a mental force, too.

-I feel like if I played the way I did this year versus17 the way I was playing last year, I'd probably win.

-I don't know many people in history who would beat him.

-If you can't compete against the best and beat the best, then you don't deserve to win these titles.

-I'm not going to ruin what I've achieved just because he was better than me today.

Roger Federer's Playing Style

Defense

He has great defense at the back of the court and is exceptionally23 good at returning deep, close-to-the-baseline shots from his opponents24. He is among the best in the world at chasing down25 his opponents' dominant26 baseline shots and keeping balls in play.

At the Net
