What I have been worrying about for the country is that the government is now concentrating more on the economic growth rate than the mortal educations for the people. If asked what the main spirit of the Chinese people is, I'm afraid I have no correct answer for that.

If I say we Chinese people have politeness and courtesy, our people spit overseas and seldom line up to buy things or wait for buses. I was deep impressed by one of our Chinese passengers when I was in an airplane of Air Canada. This fellow was having a difficulty putting his package into the box above the seats, when the others were getting on the plane. The small corridor was not wide enough for two persons to pass at the same time, so people were stuck there, waiting for the fellow to finish his work. If I were him, I would have let the others pass by first, because it would take some time. In another word, his package was too big to be put into the small box. Ignoring all the noises, the poor guy just concentrated on his giant size package. I could see the satirical laughter of those Canadians. And I felt so ashamed and disgraceful for that! The Chinese fellow took 15 minutes to get it done in the end! And you know what? The other passengers applauded for him, who made this poor fellow feel like a hero. While he was smiling so happily and innocently, I felt rather embarrassed.

There will be no medicine to heal this disease when people take selfishness for granted! This is what the foreigners always like to talk about the "Chinamen". Getting richer and richer does not earn back enough respect for us in this international family.

Something must be done to change the negative image of China and the Chinese. We do have many good and positive comments from other countries. We could have more good ones if we can get rid of those bad habits. And I believe we can make it within 100 years or so!
