Work Report

-on Teaching PETS-4

A semester has passed by swiftly without the least consciousness under the great mutual pleasure of my students and me. Last Saturday evening, when I came to realize that was the final class for this phase of training, I was totally filled with complicated feelings. I felt happy, for my students and I had accomplished a whole-term task, in which we all made a great stride in English, and I could finally have a good rest after months of painstaking toil. Nonetheless, I could not help feeling upset meantime, for I had to wave goodbye to my dear students for the moment and it was hard to foresee whether we could have the chance to reunion again. I know the head of the PETS training department and some teachers as well as my students are all looking forward to my coming back. However, I have no idea the specific arrangement of my time and life in the coming semester. Hence I did not promise them decisively.

Having poured out such lengthy sentiments, I am supposed to come back on the right track and report my session work. I would like to detail it into the following several parts.

In the first place come my teaching methods. During the past semester, I was somewhat a little over-strict with my students. Besides being required to attend classes about half an hour earlier than normal time, they were supposed to concentrate on the content I taught. They were required to listen attentively and note down the key points that were not presented on books but were commonlypracticed in our life. Apart from the work in class, they ought to fulfill a relatively large amount of homework than their peers of other classes. I assigned two compositions to them every week, one of which was topic-designated and the other of which was simply a diary that allowed them to stream their current feelings about the affairs happening around them. Moreover, they needed to finish at least a mock exam paper of PETS-4 and do no less than 3 hours' listening and 3500 words of reading every week. In order to activate their passion of speaking and improve their oral English, I divided them into two-person groups, requiring they to practice with their partners at least once a week for more than one hour. The topics they chose are not constrained, but they were well advised to refer to the topics in our textbook because those topics are exam-oriented and closest to the exam they are going to take. In my class, I went all out of my way to diversify my methods and contents which included role-playing, riddle-guessing, poem-appreciating, song-singing, etc. Definitely before I undertook these colorful activities, I would finish the given task originating from the textbook.

Through our joint efforts, we have yielded a fantastic result. The writing skills and levels of the majority of students have been greatly elevated. Their abilities of listening and reading have been enormously intensified compared with the situation they were in at the beginning stage of our term. More excitingly, their vocabulary has been considerably enlarged, reaching 5000 words average. They can touch moderate even a little higher-level English materials like magazines and newspapers without too much difficulty. Most of them could understand the normal newscast to a large extent, and more importantly, they can communicate and interact with native speakers fluently and confidently. I remember before I left last time, our foreign teacher, Peter, from America, selected some of my students randomly and discussed an issue with them. After the discussion came to an end, Peter was more than astounded at the students' progress in oral English and complimented us greatly. That can strongly verify our mutual efforts all the term!

Needless to say, there are also some shortcomings that need overmastering. Firstly, I need to recommend more practical and relevant books that are wonderfully fit for the students' level for them to read so as to familiarize them with the universally used items in our life. The students should be instructed to put what they learn into practice. Secondly, because of my extremely crammed timetable, hardly could I correct and revise my students' compositions word by word, line by line. For most compositions, I just scored them with a mark. I am pondering rearranging my timetable more aptly if possible. Thirdly, due to my still-need-to-be-improved qualification and vision, what I could render to my students is limited. Hence I am resolving to further expand my eyeshot and arm myself with more knowledge both in English and other fields.

Going hand in hand with my students all the way, I do learn a lot! Now I have fully understood that teaching is also learning. Through teaching, aside from enlightening my students in study and life, I can also be hugely elevated meanwhile. If I go back to my work next semester, I will undoubtedly reform my teaching methods for the better, and do my work with greater passion, and of course create a bigger miracle with my students!
