They are among the most well-known women in Britain but the chances are that you have never seen them like this before. Cherie Blair, Fiona Bruce, and Annie Lennox are among 21 women who have all been captured on canvas for a series of paintings celebrating women of high achievement.

Alice Instone's Twenty One Twenty First Century Women challenges the way women are traditionally portrayed.

Ms Instone said: "It hit me while I was walking around the National Portrait Gallery that it is dominated by pictures of men - at least the early galleries are. If there are pictures of women, they tend to be rather unfeminine or very Lady Macbethish.

"It is all very formulaic. The women are always discreetly placed in front of heavy drapes and the pictures reinforce the high idea that high achievers are somehow schemers.

"I wanted my paintings to celebrate the power of the women but also to capture their femininity."

Ms Instone, 30, was able to attract sitters from a wide cross-section of public life including business, commerce, science and the arts.

Many of the participants, who included Dianne Thompson, the chief executive of Camelot, Baroness Helena Kennedy and Val Gooding the chief executive of Bupa, recommended their friends to the artist.

"Cherie Blair was particularly good at getting other people to take part," Ms Instone said.

A red chair, which acts as a makeshift throne, appears in many of the pictures. The artist, was keen, however, to ensure that the women struck their own individual poses. "As they relaxed they adopted a characteristic pose and those poses say so much about their individual characters," she said. "Annie Lennox has never been painted because she thought a picture might be traditional and stuffy.

"She is seated like a coiled spring in the picture and that captures the tension and energy which is a fundamental part of her.

"Annie did consider doing a nude picture but in the end she opted for an underwear shot." Jilly Cooper said she was delighted with her picture. "I have only seen a photograph of it but I am very pleased. I was a bit hesitant to sit at first but I had a very happy day with Alice and we just giggled all the way through.

"When I heard it was called women of influence or some such thing I thought at last I've arrived." Ms Instone is the first artist to paint Mrs Blair since she and her husband entered Downing Street in 1997. She said: "I painted Mrs Blair in the dining room at Downing Street and I was surprised by how amazingly pretty she is in real life. Many of the pictures you see in the papers are used to show her in the worst possible light.

"The two sittings with her were very informal and she chatted away. At one stage Euan wandered into the room in his boxing shorts and vest. She told him how eccentric he looked."

"I know friends of Cherie who have seen the painting like it a lot. They say I have captured the vulnerable side of her which you rarely see in public."

The paintings will go on display in the summer but a venue has yet to be finalised. The exhibition also include pictures of Shami Chakrabarti, the director of Liberty, and Nicole Farhi, the fashion designer.
