The 29-year-old Bayern Munich captain is out of contract in May and Becker said: "I think there is definitely something happening before the World Cup. Right now we are exclusively talking to Chelsea."

The Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho expressed his enthusiasm to the German newspaper Bild: "Ballack is worth at least ￡25m and I want him. He said he needs time before making a decision. I respect that and now it's up to him."

He added that Ballack and Frank Lampard could form an ideal partnership. "For me Ballack is one of the best players in the world.
