LONDON (Reuters) - Some 400 police recruits, staff and schoolchildren will bid for a world record on Thursday by handcuffing themselves together to form a giant human chain.

While world records already exist for oddities like the longest handcuffed swim, biggest handcuff collection and fastest escape from a set of handcuffs, no one has apparently attempted mass handcuffing -- at least not in public.

"No one has done this before. It will be a world first -- and with real police handcuffs not plastic ties," a spokeswoman for Hendon police training college in north London told Reuters. "So I hope they have all the keys too."

The event, expected to take about 30 minutes, is to raise money for charity -- so each participant will be charged three pounds for the privilege of joining the long arm of the law.
