British travellers, many of them young, drink twice as much alcohol as they would normally at home, according to a survey by Australia's National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre.
"The image of the hard-drinking, hard-playing UK backpacker appears to be reinforced by the results," study author Paul Dillon told Australian media on Tuesday.
The study, based on more than 1,000 interviews with British backpackers in Sydney and tropical Cairns, found 40 percent drank at least five times a week compared to just 20 percent at home.
"Backpackers, by their very nature, are going to be more likely to be risk-takers and they are not just doing it for the week, they are doing it for the whole year," Dillon said.
Around 670,000 Britons visit Australia each year, lured by the promise of sun and the country's famous beaches. Many are backpackers who spend up to twelve months travelling around the country's coastline and outback interior.
