First Aid for Burns
Teaching Goals:
1)Enable Ss to learn the importance of first aid.
2)Get Ss to know burns and learn to give first aid when someone is burned.
Teaching important & difficult points:
Help Ss judge 3 types of burns and how to give first aid in this situation.

Teaching procedures:
Step1: Warming-up
T: Hello, everyone! You have discussed and played what to do when some accidents happen last period. You all did a good job! What do you know about first aid? Then what is First aid? First aid is ___ ___ ___ ____ given to someone who suddenly ___ ___ or ___ ____before a doctor can be found. (T presents on the screen)
Ss: First aid is the first kind help given to someone who suddenly falls ill or gets injured before a doctor can be found.
T: Excellent! Now please turn to P74 and do exercise: First aid quiz:
Ss:(Students turn to P74 and do them one by one)

T: Wonderful! All of you have good knowledge of first aid. Although some accidents are small and some are serious. When an accident happens, we should keep calm and deal with it correctly.
T: Why First aid is important?
Ss: If we can give first aid quickly and correctly, we will save one’s life.
T: That’s right!
Step2:Lead-in
T: Look at the 3 pictures, what happen to them?(T presents 3pictures on the screen)
Ss: A hand gets burned.
Ss: Burns cover the little girl’s face.
Ss: The man’s whole body gets burned seriously.
T: How do you feel after
seeing the pictures?
Ss: Very sorry; Sad; terrible; disgusting; lousy…
T: What kind of first aid would you perform in this situation?
Ss: …
T: Now let’s read the text and try to find the answers.
Step 3: Reading
I. Fast-reading:
T: Read the passage quickly and do Exe.1 on P35.
Ss: 3-5-1-4-2
T: Good! Now label the 3pictures with first, second and third degree burn. (Exe.2 on P35)
Ss: Picture1: second degree burn; Picture2: first degree burn; Picture3: third degree burn.
T: How do you
distinguish the 3 types of burns?
Ss: Skin.
T: Yes, we depend on which layers of the skin are burned. Now listen to the tape and answer these 2 questions:
Q1: What causes the burns?
Q2: What are the characteristics of each type of burns? (On the screen)
T: Can you explain in details? Who would like to have a try? (After listening to the tape)
S12: First degree burns
affect only the top layer of the skin. They are not serious and would feel better within a day or two. They can get burned by mild sunburn, hot pan or iron. The characteristics will be dry, red and
mildlyswollen and painful. When you press, it will turn white.
S13: Second degree burns
affect both the top and the second layer of the skin. They are serious and take a few weeks to heal. They get burned by
severe sunburn, steam, radiation and hot liquids. They will be rough, red, swollen,
extremely painful,
watery and bullate.
S14: Third degree burns
affect all 3 layers of the skin,
tissue and organ under the skin. They are the most serious injuries. They are caused by electric shocks, burning clothes, chemicals or
severe petrol fires. They will be black, white, charred and swollen. We can see the
tissue and the nerves are damaged. There is little or no pain or pain around edge of the injured area.
