在本单元第 47 课的语言练习中要求对名词性从句进行辨认和应用。要想做到这一点就
必须了解引导名词性从句的连接词如 how ,why, where ,what 等,在引导不同的名词性从句时,含义并不相同。
● what
可引导主语从句、宾语从句、表语从句,其含义通常有下列几种:
1.“什么”,“什么样的”。如:
The problem is what we should do next.
I don't know what books you have read recently.
2.“……的”,“所……的事”,相当于the thing(s) that (which) / all that 等。如:
What I am not quite clear about is his address.
Nicotine!That's what smokers need.
3.“……的人”,相当于“the person who (that)…”。如:
He is much different from what he used to be.
She is not what she was ten years ago.
4.“……的地方”,相当于“the place that…”。如:
This is what the children call“home”.
What is now the primary school was once an old temple.
5.“……的时间”,相当于“the time that…”。如:
After what seemed a very long time,I opened my eyes and found myself in bed!
Times aren't what they were.
由此看出,what 的用法不能千篇一律,要根据具体情况灵活运用。又如:
Your mother's health is not what it ought to be.
此句中 what=the health that
The population is now double what it was ten years ago.此句中 what=the number that
They paid fifty percent of what they were able to earm to the state.此句中 what= the money that
● why
1.引导主语从句和宾语从句时,意思是“为什么”。如:
Why he didn't come to class yesterday is still a puzzle.
Do you know why winter is colder than summer?
2.引导表语从句时,意思是“……的原因”。如:
That's why she was absent from school yesterday.
Ten years of hard work!That's why I now look so old.
● where
1.引导主语从句和宾语从句时,意思是“哪儿”。如:
Where she has gone is not known yet.
The little boy couldn't tell where his home was.
2.引导表语从句时,意思是“……地方”。如:
That's where Chairman Mao once lived.
● how
1.引导主语从句、宾语从句,意思是“怎样”,“怎么”,“如何”。如:
How they went there is unknown to us.
Excuse me,could you tell me how I can get to the Summer Palace?
2.引导表语从句时译作“这样”。如:
This is how they overcame the difficulties.
This is how we worked out these problems.

指点迷津

使役动词 have 句型归纳

这几个句型里的 have / get 的意思是“叫”“让”“使”,后接复合宾语。由于其宾语补足语分别由过去分词、现在分词、动词不定式来充当,所以不同句型意义也就不同,现分述如下:
句型:have + 名词 + 过去分词
“让(叫)某事由别人做”或“遇到某种情况,叙述某种遭遇,损失”等。
The town is going to have a new swimming - pool built soon.这个城镇将在不久
后修一个游泳池。
She has had her bones broken.她骨折了。(叙述一种遭遇)
句型:have + 名词 + 现在分词
