Unit 3 Festivals in China
Teaching suggestions
1.Ask students to say some Chinese festivals, as many as possible. Let students learn about the festivals’ names in English.
2.Divide the students into groups to write a few sentences about what people usually do at festivals by using the expressions in Look and read. Then invite a member from each group to read their sentences to the class.
3.Ask students to read the
description of Chinese New Year in Look and read and see if they can add more information to it.
Teaching aims
Language focus:
1.Using the simple present tense to talk about present states.
2.Using the future tense to talk about future events and actions
3.Using the past tense to talk about the past activities.
4.Using proper nouns to indicate festivals and connectives to add information.
Language skills:
Listening
Recognize differences in the use of intonation and understand the
connection between ideas by recognizing linking words and phrases. Listen for
specific information.
Speaking
Open an interaction by eliciting a
response by asking questions and
maintain an interaction by replying to questions.
Reading
Read written language in meaningful chunks, recognize recurrent patterns in language
structure and use visual clues, context and knowledge of the world to work out meaning of an unknown word and a complete expression.
Writing
Gather and share information, idea and language by using strategies such as questioning, listing, brainstorming and interviewing. Write out a piece of work by presenting
writing using
appropriate layout and visual support including charts where necessary.
Strategy
Recognize the rules of the English language and
promote one’s
learning by applying the rules.
Use
facial expressions and gestures to
promote communication, looking for information by using a dictionary.
Try to read stories in English or other materials. Make use of materials in library or on the Internet to
promote English language learning.
Attitude
Recognize the aim of
learning English is for communication, be
confident in expressing in English and recognize the
abundantculture of China.
Learn to
cooperate with others in group work, help each other and finish the task together.
Culture
Learn about sports culture, activities and
entertainment of English-speaking countries.

Step 2 talk about the festivals in China they know and learn the names of different festivals
