Wang Fei: And I'm Wang Fei. So what are we going to learn today Diarmuid?
Diarmuid: Today's expression is heads up.
Wang Fei: Heads up?
Diarmuid: Yes, heads up. That's two words. Heads: H.E.A.D.S. and up: U.P.
Wang Fei: Heads up. 是"向上看"的意思吗?Diarmuid. Those are two very simple words. I'm guessing the meaning is to look up.
Diarmuid: I can see why you would think that but in fact the meaning is very different.
Wang Fei: 大家注意了,今天的 heads up 这个短语并不是它的字面意思,所以不能望文生义。
Diarmuid: Yes, let me explain. Heads up actually means a warning or a passing on of information.
Wang Fei: 原来这个短语的意思是"发出警告或传递重要消息"的意思。
Diarmuid: That's right.
Wang Fei: 我们能不能这么说: I'm giving you a heads up that the boss is in a very bad mood today.
Diarmuid: Very good Wang Fei. That's exactly how to use it. With the phrase heads up we often use the verb give. So you give somebody a heads up.
Wang Fei: 这里,我们要用 give 这个动词和 heads up 搭配,give somebody a heads up.
Diarmuid: That's right. Now let's hear some examples:
A: Make sure your work is up to standard. The boss is going to inspect your work later on today.
B: Thanks for the heads up.
A: I'm going to give you a heads up that there'll be a surprise exam tomorrow.
B: Lucky you told me. I need to revise.
Wang Fei: What a useful expression Diarmuid. Now I have a heads up for you.
Diarmuid: Really? What's that?
Wang Fei: The heads up is that we have nearly reached the end of the programme.
Diarmuid: Gosh! So we have.
