Every morning we see people walking in the park and swinging their arms at the same time while others walk
barefooted along the stone paths. Do you find such sights bizarre? Actually, they are applying Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theories on staying
healthy into their exercise regime.
Over the past few years,
everyone has been paying more and more attention to their
physical health. As such, the methods put forth by TCM also gained popularity. Today we'll talk about the concepts on maintaining good health propagated by TCM.
Firstly, TCM maintains that people should live by nature's rhythm. In this respect,
everyone is very familiar with the
phrase "sprout in the spring, grow in the summer,
harvest in the autumn, and store in the winter." What this means is that, in spring, plants start to grow, by summer its growth has reached maturity, so autumn is the time for reaping the
harvest and finally winter is the time to store away the gains. Likewise, people should also
adhere to the rhythms of nature. For example, in summer, the day breaks earlier, so we should also get up earlier;
nightfall takes place later, so we should also go to bed a little later.
Next, TCM also tells us to
maintain an optimistic outlook. Being optimistic promotes a happy mood, and this facilitates our quest in staying healthy. Conversely, a pessimistic
outlook greatly harms our health. The World Health Organization (WHO) once mentioned, "Mental health makes up half your entire health." The optimistic
outlook advocated by TCM is very similar to the
mental health advocated by
western medicine.
Additionally, food and exercise also play an important role in TCM. Food supplies
energy to our life force while exercise helps to increase our body's mass. TCM recommends different types of food and different methods of exercise for different people. Whatever you feel like eating is a signal that your body is
lacking it,
therefore you should
consume more of it. Different people have different lifestyles and habits. Moreover the conditions they face at work is also different. Therefore, with regards to the questions "what to eat" and "how much to eat", there isn't any one standard which applies for everyone. The same
reasoning applies to exercise. If you are young and are full of energy, you can opt for running, playing football, swimming, etc as part of your exercise regime. As for the elderly, going for a walk is a better option.
