Nankai University
Each time when my friends came to Tianjin, I would take them to visit the Nankai University. I always said to them, "For so long, I think Nankai University stands out to be the best place in Tianjin". Nankai University has altogether three canteens. If you dine there once in a while, you will find it quite tasty. However, if you eat there everyday, finally you would prefer staying hungry than eat. Tailored to the students who are "short of money" but unwilling to have meals in the canteens, there are many other eateries in the neighborhood of the university, where we can have better food and gain good appetite with only a small sum of money!
Jiang Nan Gu Zhen, located by the Boling Building of the Southwest Village in Nankai University, mainly sells Jiangsu-Zhejiang dishes, and the dishes recommended include steamed meat cake with egg, fried meat with pickled cabbage and shredded bamboo shoot, fried egg with loofah, braised chicken, and minced pork with eggplant. Each time I have meal there, I can't help admiring the cooking skill of the landlady. Though I am always convinced that perseverance makes success, I have to admit that she must be blessed with a gift for cooking.
Jin Peng Restaurant is located at Gate 2 of Building 14 of the Southwest Village in Nankai University. The dishes recommended there include Shandong cabbage, Jinpeng quick-fried meat, and fried potato with vinegar and sugar. Whenever I have meat dish there, I will doubt whether it is the real meat, for the price is unbelievably cheap!
Chuan Wei Ju, located at Gate 2 of Building 15 of the Southwest Village in Nankai University, mainly features Sichuan cuisine. The dishes recommended include fried mater convolvulus, mashed potato, and spicy shredded meat.
Chuan Nan Xiang is located beside the Kemao Building at the Baidi Road in Nankai District (near the west gate of Nankai University). The recommended dishes include twice-cooked potato slice, fried mater convolvulus, and boiled pork slices in a fiery source. The twice-cooked potato slice is a must order. Just the thought of the crisp potato slices with the sweet chilly sauce makes my mouth water.
The above is a general introduction to the local delicacies in Tianjin based on my personal experience. The city accommodates about 10,000 restaurants, and the restaurants I have been to account for less than one thousandth of them. So what I say is just for your reference!
An old Chinese saying goes like this "Food is the paramount necessity of the people", taken from the History of the Han Dynasty. Life in the past was not so good as present, and being adequately fed was a problem to many people. With the development of society, filling the belly is no longer a problem, but this saying is still frequently used. My understanding of this is that having meals has been transcending from a simple necessity to a kind of knowledge. Eating with different people requires different etiquettes, such as how to arrange the seats and how to order and toast. It is said if one can skillfully manage all of these, he would better get to know the essence of Chinese culture. Thus, when I learn the Chinese language, I have to be familiarized with the food here so as to know deeply of the overall culture.
