At that time, the sky was always blue and every day was arranged fairly tight. I was always complaining the endless hard days, but in a wink it has all gone and I'm still in the original place back here...
It was the first time when I had to fly for more than ten hours from China to the UK, which was more like a torture to me for at that time there was no such advanced game machines like PSP. I only had an English-Chinese dictionary in my pocket to while away the time. When it was approaching London, I looked through the window and saw rows of small red houses. My heart sank. Though the houses were tidy, they were all small and red ones. There were no sign of tall buildings. The whole city was very much like a big village. Was this the London, capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which was one of top five economies? Where were the skyscrapers, the running autos and the people who were in trim suits?...
The first test I met on the land was going through the border agency. All the people with student visas were gathered to a small room and questioned. To save money, I hadn't taken the physicalexamination in China before coming here. I lied to the "auntie" with the Border Agency and said, "I forgot to bring the health certificate." However, the "auntie" was not so easy to be fooled and replied," Why didn't you forget to take your schoolbag with you?" Then I was taken to a back dark room for a provisional physicalexamination before I was finally let through.
Street Scene of London
For the first few days, I stayed in my father's colleague's home. After the breakfast of butter, bread and omelet, I went out. I bought a map and highlighted the places I wanted to visit. Having studied the route carefully, I changed some money and set out. In the beginning, I couldn't help converting the price I saw to Renminbi, and I felt that everything was so expensive here: taking a subway would cost at least 20 yuan; even a bus ride would cost 10 yuan; a bottle of soda water was 7 to 8 yuan; the simplest meal would cost at least 50 yuan. When I called my home with a public phone, I only found that a coin of one pound could only buy about 20 seconds service of an international call. I figured that in line with the consumption level, and the little money I brought, I would have to be a begger on the street in at most 3 or 4 months. The thought made me dizzy.

Since I was in London, I could do with the high consumption level by living economically but the money for some world renowned places should not be spared. London itself was a city of contradiction, a combination of antiquity and fashion, tradition and modernity, conservativeness and extremism. It was hard for it to forget the history or to face the reality. A classicquotation went like this, "If you love someone, send him to London; if you hate someone, send him to London." —The heaven and the hell were in fact very close to each other. The Westminster Abbey and the Big Ben situated on the Thames appeared calm and solemn, which seemed to exist only in the middle age, and passengers around were hurry on their way to somewhere with blank faces. In front of the splendid museum-like Harrods Mall, people would be overjoyed for carrying a Harrods shopping bag. The red double-deck buses, and the red telephone boothes had already become one of the famous symbols of London, while how many people knew the creator of the Trafalgar statues on the square? The neat and handsome guards at the Buckingham were playing the endless game of "changing guards". They always held their heads high, and never had the intention to bend for the crimes their colonial country had committed for collecting the exhibits stored in the British Museum now.

London is the epitome of the UK. I knew more about its characters in my study and life afterwards, which helps me have a complete and vivid picture of the whole country. Before my departure with the country, I tolerated all its defects and finally took a liking to this place.
