Someone once said that one's biggest enemy is no other but himself. As long as he believes in himself, and try to conquer himself, he can achieve the final success. Previously I didn't have much confidence in it and thus failed in many things. But I regained the confidence in myself until one thing came.
It was in the summer of 2007 when I went to learn swimming. I couldn't help stepping back when I saw the deep water in the pool. My trainer told me to get some practice in the shoaling water, but I was still afraid and my foot retreated the moment it touched the water. The trainer said to me: "Are you so intimidated by the water? Go to the water quickly." I took great care to enter the water, but the pool like a swamp kept dragging me down. I lost courage again and climbed out as soon as possible. I went to see other people swim in stead. They were swimming with great ease like joyous fish. I looked at them enviously and thought: "if only I could swim as well as them!" I put on my goggles, and felt better for a while. Suddenly, someone gave me a push, and I slumped into the pool.
Subconsciously I began to take to the most basic stroke of swimming — the dog paddle. To my surprise, I found myself floating on the surface for a few seconds and sank down again. I kicked and kicked, and finally managed to catch the handrail and got out of the water. I spent a moment to collect myself and said to myself:" it was a really dangerous moment just now, but swimming was not so difficult as I had thought." After resting for a few minutes, the trainer came to me and said: "you've done quite well just now. Remember to relax yourself when you get into the water, so you will float for a longer time. Don't be afraid and trust yourself! Try it again." I kept telling myself I could make it; I took a few deep breaths to relax myself, and jumped into the water according to the trainer's instructions. I sunk for a second and immediately floated up. This time I did better. After sustained practice I've learned how to swim in the end and I found myself more confident and courageous in doing things.
From the experience I've come to know that one can achieve what he wants as long as he has faith in himself.
