春秋的时候，齐国的孟尝君在家里养了三千门客。有一天，朋友给他介绍了冯谖当门客。在孟尝君遇到困难时，冯谖不但给他出主意解围，。还对孟尝君说："一只兔子至少要有三个地方藏身才安全，您现在只有齐国一个地方可以待着，万一国君对你不满意，你连躲避的地方都没有！"
During the period of spring and autumn, Lord Mengchang of Qi had three thousand guests at home. One day, his friend introduced Feng Xuan to be his guests. When Lord Menghcang had difficulties, Feng Yuan not only gave him suggestions, but also told Lord Mengchang that, "A rabbit needs at least three places to hide. You only have one place, Qi, to stay. If the king is not happy with you, you do not need have a place to hide."
后来，冯谖想帮孟尝君再找一处安身之地，就向梁王推荐孟尝君，说他非常能干，梁王听了之后立刻派人带着黄金去请孟尝君到梁国做官。齐国的国君一听很紧张，怕孟尝君投奔梁国，赶紧用隆重的礼节招待孟尝君。冯谖又让孟尝君在薛地建了宗庙。这个时候冯谖对孟尝君说："现在这三个地方都是你的安身之所了，你的三个洞都已经挖好了，从今天起，你可以把枕头垫高，安心地睡觉了。"
Then, Feng Yuan tried to find another place for Lord Menghcang. He recommended Lord Mengchang to King of Liang, and praised Lord Menghcang for his abilities. After hearing that, King of Liang sent official with gold to ask Lord Mengchang to be an official in his country. King of Qi felt nervous and was afraid that Lord Mengchang would come to work in Liang. He used grand etiquettes to treat Lord Mengchang. Feng Yuan then asked Lord Mengchang to build an ancestral in Xuedi. Then Feng Yuan told Lord Mengchang that, "Now you have three places to live. All the three holes for you are built now. From now on, you can rest easy and sleep well."
