During the Spring and Autumn Period, the State of Jin wanted to expand its borders by invading the neighboring State of Guo. However, between the two states lay the state of Yu, so the King needed to bribe the King of Yu with beautiful jade for permission to pass through their state.

Gong Zhiqi, an official of Yu tried to dissuade the King at once, "Yu and Guo are interdependent nations that should help each other when problems occur. If Guo is destroyed, Yu could be in the same position. There is a saying that teeth cannot live without lips. So we must not allow the State of Jin to pass through our country."However, the King of Yu refused to listen to him at all. In the end, the army of Jin destroyed Guo by passing through Yu and then destroyed Yu on their way back to their own nation.
