      一位失眠的病人对医生说："我家外面的狗整夜都在叫，我怎么都睡不着。"
      于是，医生给他开了安眠药。
      一星期后，病人又来了，看上去样子比上次更无精打采。
      医生问他："是不是安眠药没效果？"
      病人说："不知道。我每晚去追那些狗，好不容易捉到一只，可它怎么也不肯吃安眠药。"

A patient with insomnia said to the doctor:" A batch of dogs are barking outside my window, which keeps me awake all night."
The doctor then gave him some sleeping pills.
One week later, the patient came to the doctor again and looked even more exhausted.
The doctor asked:" Didn't the pills take effect?"
The patient replied:" I have no idea. I chased the dogs every night. When I got one with great difficulty, I just could not feed it with your sleeping pills."

"怎么"表示任指
"怎么"是一个疑问副词，用来询问方式。但是，它也可以表示任指，强调任何方式都没有例外。后面常常有副词"都"或者"也"呼应，如文章里的句子：

"怎么(zěnme)" means "no matter what; whatever".
It is an interrogative adverb, which is used to ask the means of doing something. However, it could also means "no matter what; whatever", which emphasizes there is no exception. "怎么(zěnme)" is always used together with adverbs like "都(dōu)" or "也(yě)", as in the following sentences:

它怎么也不肯吃安眠药。
I couldn't feed it with your sleeping pills by all means.

有时候，前面还可以加上连词"不管"、"不论"或者"无论"：
Sometimes, it could be used after conjunctions as "不管(bùguǎn)", "不论(búlùn)" or "无论(wúlùn)". For example:

不管我怎么叫他，他都不答应。
No matter how I tried to call him, he refused to respond.
无论你们怎么用，都不会坏。
No matter how you use it, it can still function well.
