When studying fashion design in the early 1990s in Shanghai, Wang Yiyang eyed the poofy stand-up collars and other flashy couture designed by fellow students inspired by the West - and decided to steer clear of it.


一扬于上世纪90年代初在上海学习时装设计。同学们受西方影响,设计出蓬蓬的立领以及其他如高级订制服装般炫目的设计。他看在眼里,心里想着要另走他途。





这位来自东北吉林省的时年20岁的设计师想要设计的是拥有中国印记的服装。于是,他和黄志锋一起创建了素然(Zuczug)这个时装品牌,到如今已经走过11个年头了。中国很多时尚评论人士认为,早在Gap和H&M(Hennes & Mauritz)进入中国之前,素然便已开创出了一种可持续发展的经营模式,并用各类藏族印花帽衫、中国生肖图案围巾和毛衣,来表达一个时代以及与西方不同的文化。



The then 20-year-old designer from China' s northeastern Jilin province instead wanted to make clothing inspired by China. The decision resulted in Zuczug, an 11-year-old women's fashion label that he created with Huang Zhifeng . Many of China' s fashion critics believe Zuczug has created a sustainable business predating the Chinese emergence of Gap Inc. and Hennes & Mauritz, offering Tibetan-print parkas and Chinese zodiac scarves and sweaters that express a time and culture different from the West.


业内人士与专家对王一扬很是推崇,认为他早就把自己的设计推向了大众,遥遥领先于如今喧嚣的中国原创设计大潮。现代传播集团(Modern Media)编辑总监叶晓薇说,"现在每个人都要做自己的牌子,但想想10年前,王一扬是唯一有此实践的人。"



Industry insiders and experts tip their hat to Mr. Wang for making design accessible to consumers long before the current flood of Chinese fashion designers emerged to make a name for themselves. 'Everyone wants to create a brand now, but think back 10 years ago, and Wang Yiyang was the only one attempting to do this,' said Yeh Shaway, editorialdirector of Chinese media company Modern Media.


从50万元人民币投资起家的素然,现在已在全中国拥有了73家店铺(Gap在中国目前有25家店铺),为女性提供既经典又富有表现力的应季服装,包括用驼毛制作的紧身连衣裙,用色彩丰富的毛线织成的半裙。



Zuczug, with a starting investment of 500,000 yuan, has established a chain of 73 stores across the country (For a comparison, Gap has around 25 stores in China) that offer women seasonable collections of clothing ranging dresses with bodices made of camel wool to skirts knit from multicolored wool yarn that is meant to be timeless and expressive.


尽管价格并不便宜,一条用斯潘德克思弹性面料(Spandex)制作的橘色马裤,标价是1150元,但品牌想要营造的是平易可亲的形象。王一扬说,素然使用素颜模特来代言产品,在选模特时,其个性比体形更受重视。王一扬说,"我想看到人们真实的微笑。"



While prices are premium -- a pair of orange stretch-Spandex riding pants costs 1,150 yuan -- the brand is meant to be approachable. Zuczug uses natural models who are chosen for their character rather than their figure, Mr. Wang said.
