The Chang'e-1 is currently heading towards the moon, after it blasted off on a Long March 3A
carrierrocket at 6:05 p.m. from the No. 3 launching tower in the Xichang Satellite Launch Center of Sichuan Province on October 24, 2007.
The Chinese scientists will for the first time have three-dimensional pictures taken for the whole lunar surface,
explore into the
amount and
distribution of 14 elements on lunar surface and probe into the
thickness of the whole lunar earth. This will be the first time that China acquires first-hand data on moon-earth space
environment 70,000 kilometers away.
Space
flight is a high-risk undertaking, and lunar probing is particularly so. Judging from the
satellite system, the major risk is whether the orbit changes can be completed
precisely and promptly. The biggest difficulty lies in the lack of deep, first-hand understanding of lunar environment.
China's lunar probing is serving entirely for the
peaceful use of space.
