A powerful 7.2-magnitudeearthquake struck eastern Turkey on Sunday, collapsing apartment buildings and cutting communications and power in the city of Van and its surroundings.


土耳其东部周日发生7.2级强烈地震,导致凡城(Van)及周边地区住宅楼倒塌、通讯和电力中断。



Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who visited the area late Sunday, said the earthquake had killed at least 138 people in the area, and an unknown number of people were trapped as night fell and the temperature dropped.


土耳其总理埃尔多安(Recep Tayyip Erdogan)周日晚间视察震区。据他说,地震已造成该地区至少138人死亡,而在夜幕降临、气温下降之际,还有数量未知的人员被困。



Mr. Edogan said 93 people died in Van and 45 more in the nearby town of Ercis. Around 350 people had been injured, he said. In Ercis, 'the number of people under rubble is unclear,' he said, adding that 55 buildings had collapsed in that town.


埃尔多安说,凡城有93人死亡,附近城镇埃尔吉斯(Ercis)另有45人死亡。他说,约有350人受伤。他说,在埃尔吉斯,废墟下的人数不清楚,且有55座建筑已经倒塌。



An eyewitness said a number of buildings in central Van collapsed, leaving people panicked in the streets, while as many as 1,000 people were thronging outside the local hospital.


一位目击者说,凡城市中心多座建筑倒塌,吓坏了街上的人,同时有很多人拥挤在当地医院门外,最多可能有1000人。



After the quake, more than a dozen aftershocks were felt, according to Turkish television. The strongest one, at magnitude 5.7, shook Van just before midnight local time, when Mr. Erdogan was still visiting the region.
