These days I keep practicing IELTS oral English with some people who have been working as a part-time job. In the course of practicing with them, I was constantly struck by some feelings stemming from their situations.

Without doubt, they have already successfullyapplied for their ideal school abroad. However, their thrill of being admitted to foreign university did not last long because they have to be confronted with another tough enemy, IELTS. They are required by their school to reach a certain score, say 6 or 6.5 even7, before they go there. Nevertheless, having worked for several years without touch of English, their English remains little trace in their mind. They have to pick it up again, but with enormous strength and without a guaranteed undertaking that they can surely get the score they are anticipating. Anyway, in order to realize their dream, they have to fight even with a slight beam of hope.

Then a long and tough journey unveils. They quit their present jobs and bathe in piles of reference books day and night. But some of them dare not quit the job so decisively due to their financial awkwardness, so after a day of tedious efforts and being back home, they still have little time to take sip of tea but have to combat with a various range of exercise relevant to IELTS. When they feel exhausted and want to rest, they may think of their dream and the monstrous exam as well as their fragile foundation, they have to pull themselves together and march on. At that time, they might feel deeply regretful for not having learnt English well in college. But now complaint and regret do not work at all. They still have to face the music and accept the cruel reality.

That is all I know about those who are struggling with IELTS strenuously. Why do I tell you all this? Actually my purpose is very simple, that is to ask you to try your best to learn English well regardless of your present attitude towards it, whether it is love or hatred. Maybe you will harbor an illusion that in the future you resolve to work in a Chinese company where you do not use English at all. So you think you can abandon English totally from now on. If you have this thinking, I will uncontrollably laugh at your ridiculous and childish thought. It is difficult for us to foresee the volatile future. What will happen in the next minute remains unknown and mysterious to us, so how can we predict for sure what we will engage in after one or two even ten years? The people I mention above are all good typical examples. When they were in college, they did not think English would be so crucial to them. Then they left it behind and now they have to pay a huge price for it both financially and mentally. So now you say for sure that you will not have any relationship with English, in the future maybe you have to pay a huge price for what you think just like those people above.

Moreover, interest can be fostered little by little. If you go out of your way to learn it, maybe someday your interest will be provoked and you will love it from the bottom of your heart. With a skilful second language, you will have more opportunities over others who do not. So for the sake of your own development, just spare no efforts to learn English well! It is never too old to learn!
