调查发现，家麻雀仍是英国最普通的鸟类，尽管自1979年以来它的数量已经减少了56％；一些不太常见的鸟，如绿黄色科的鸣鸟和鹪鹩等的数量分别增加了67％和140％；此外，画眉的数量也有所增加。

More than eight million birds were recorded in a single weekend during the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' Big Garden Birdwatch survey of 270,000 gardens.

Twitchers, including 86,000 children, reported seeing a wide range of birds, from the common blackbird to the more unusual blackcap.

Co-ordinator Richard Bashford said: "The interest has been fantastic."

House sparrows are still the most common bird in Britain, despite a 56 per cent fall in their numbers since 1979.

Less usual species such as greenfinches and wrens have increased 67 per cent and 140 per cent respectively, the January study found. There were also more blackbirds.
