Unit 1 Reading Chuck’s Friend
Step1 Revision
Ask several students to present a speech about friends as a revision.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Present the students a picture to
illustrate the situation on a
lonely island. Ask them to list three items in the box and ask them to give the reasons using the sentences listed on page3.
Step 3 Reading
Before asking the students to read the text, first give the students a brief
introduction about Tom Hanks, his films and the film Cast Away.
Skimming: Students read the text , and answer the following questions.
1.Who is Chuck?
2.What happens to Chuck one day?
3. Who is Chuck’s friend on the deserted island?
4. How many years does Chuck stay on the island?
5. What lesson can we learn from Chuck?
Scanning: The Ss read the text again and then tell whether the following sentences are true or false:
1.Chuck is a businessman
working in a company.
2.Chuck is one of the people who
survive the plane crash.
3.Collecting water and
hunting for food are all Chuck has to learn on the island.
4.Chuck makes some friends there one of whom is Wilson, a football.
5.Staying on the island helps Chuck realize his own shortcomings.
