Hopes for London's bid to host the 2012 Olympics received a major boost after Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon threw his weight behind the bid. His endorsement came days after Nelson Mandela gave his backing. The 65–year-old New Zealander said Britain had already proved it could host a major international sporting event following the success of Manchester's Commonwealth Games in 2002.
