FLOODS, landslides and mudslides brought on by Typhoon Fanapi last week left 75 people dead and 61 others missing in south China's Guangdong Province, a government spokesman said yesterday.
Magui Township of Gaochuan City and Pingtang Village of Xinyi City were hit the hardest, said Tang Hao, secretary general of the provincial government, in the latest Fanapi casualty update.
He said Fanapi-triggered disasters had caused economic losses amounting to 5 billion yuan (US$735 million).
Rescue efforts were continuing yesterday as vehicles and helicopters delivered crucial relief supplies to areas isolated by landslides.
About 128,000 residents have been evacuated in Guangdong. Also, some 16,000 houses collapsed and 66,400 hectares of farmland were damaged.
Dam collapse
Meanwhile, more than 100 tons of dead farmed fish were found in a river in neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region after a tin mine tailings dam collapsed in the upper reaches.
The fish were found dead in fish farms in the Huanghua River basin in Cenxi City in the last four days, the Cenxi departments of animal husbandry and marine industries said.
The Huanghua lies downstream of the tailings dam at the Xinyi Yinyan Tin Mine, owned by Zijin Mining Group Co in Xinyi City.
The dam collapsed on September 21 after being hit by a landslide triggered by heavy rains caused by Typhoon Fanapi, leaving five people dead, six missing and seven injured.
Latest environmental test results show that water of the Huanghua was clear of contamination as of last Friday.
