Placebo 中译"安慰剂"，乐队的名字 Placebo 取自拉丁语，含义是"我愿意"（唱赞美诗前所说的第一个词）。它是一个三人乐团，主唱兼吉他手Brian Molko，鼓手Steve Hewitt，以及Stefan Olsdal（贝司、吉他和键盘）。Stefan是瑞典人，当初和Brian在卢森堡时曾上一所学校，但那时候两人互相没说过一句话。后来他们在伦敦某地铁站偶遇，之后Stefan去看Brian弹吉他，二人决定组队。Steve那时候只是兼职，乐队开始的鼓手是Robert Schultzberg，两年后（1996年）他们辞退了Robert，Steve成为正式鼓手，安慰剂的三人格局持续至今。













Brian无意是乐队的灵魂，Brian 的父亲是美国人，母亲是英国人，他1972年12月10日生于比利时的布鲁塞尔。家中有一个比他大10岁的哥哥。之后因为父亲国际银行家的工作，他们一直在不停的搬家，最终定居在卢森堡。（Brian在法国极受欢迎，大概也由于他法语讲得好吧）17岁的时候他搬到英国，在伦敦的Goldsmiths学习戏剧，一直在那里住了五年。小时候父母曾希望他成为像他们一样的人，但结果却完全相反，Brian摆脱了他们的教育、家庭和信仰的压力，兴之所至，成为了一个涂指甲油、抹唇膏和画眼影，有着摄人双性魅力的迷幻摇滚乐手。几乎所有的媒体，只要谈到Brian都会用一个词来形容：androgynous（雌雄莫辨）。和Ziggy时期的Bowie不同，Bowie喜欢把自己打扮成奇异的外星人，他更强调的是一种绚丽华彩的视觉冲击与震撼；而相比之下Brian则很爱惜自己的脸，从来不画奇怪的妆，他注重的似乎永远都是魅惑、性感与美丽。尽管在制作乐队第三张专辑《黑市音乐》（Black Market Music）的时候Brian剪短了自己的头发，看外表似乎朴素了许多但他永远不会忘记画睫毛就像当初Bowie成为时装的风向标，而今无数影视女星也同样在模仿Brian的化妆。
