Remaking the classics



THE year-long talent show for selecting actors for a TV remake of A Dream of Red Mansions ended in June with two main actresses emerging and the leading actor role still vacant. Now three months later, the buzz surrounding the production is still going on.



Director Hu Mei, who had been scheduled to remake the drama, declared recently that she would not join the production and would shoot another Red Mansions independently, according to The Beijing Times.



Not long ago, another director, Zhang Jizhong, announced that he was going to do a remake of another classical" title="a.经典的;传统的">classical drama, Journey to the West.



So, remake (翻拍) is a hot word these days. Basically it means "to make again, usually in a new form or by adding some new elements".



The field of music uses an additional word for this, "cover", which can be used as a noun.



Beyonce Knowles could have a lawsuit on her hands relating to her cover (version) of a Des'ree track. (碧昂丝可能会因翻唱黛丝瑞的一首歌而吃官司。)



It can also be used as a verb.



Many new singers go through a period when they mainly cover famous songs from other singers.



(许多新出道的歌手都要经历以翻唱别人的经典歌曲为主的阶段。)



If a band is famous for covering a classic band, it's usually called "a tribute band" (翻唱乐队/专门模仿经典乐队的乐队).
