Period 2 Reading
The analysis of this part:
The reading section deals with a typical history article about how English developed and why it has such confusing rules.

Teaching aims:
1. Help Ss improve their readingability and learn how to read a history article with the help of a time chart.
2. Help Ss master the following words and phrases:
Throughout, confusing, vocabulary, European, create, nowadays,….
Be made up of, consist of, pick up……..
3. Ss are expected to gain an overall understanding of the article and learn to adopt different ways to read different types of articles.

How to help Ss understand the history of the English language
Teaching procedures:

Step one: Lead-in

●What do you know about the development o history of the English language?
●What do you think is the most difficult part of studying English—Pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary or something else?
●Do you think English has always stayed the same? Give some examples to explain your point.
How did these changes happen?

Step two: Fast reading?

1.Ask Ss to skim the passage and finish Part A
2.Remind Ss to pay attention to the title so that they can identify the most important information.
3.Check answers together.

Step Three: Careful reading
1.Ask Ss to read the passage again carefully with the questions on P24, Part C1-C2
2.Finish it and check the answers
3.Finish Part D1-D2
Step Four Practice (further understanding)
Finish exercises in English Weekly

Step Five: Reading strategy
Ask Ss to go through it and help them learn how to read a history article

Step Six Retelling and consolidation
1.Ask Ss to retell the history of the English Language according to the order of time.
2.Finish Part E on P25
