Topic: Colleges and universities should offer more courses on popular music, film, advertising, and television because
contemporary culture has much greater relevance for students than do arts and literature of the past
With the rapid development of science and technologies, we are enjoying a culture of privilege that our forefathers could never imagine before. The great technological improvement of MP4 allows a vaster capability of storing songs, which
tremendously conduces to the constantly mushrooming of popular music. It is the same with film, advertising and television, etc. The flourishing of internet enables the public to
access the updated films and programs. Hence definitely pop music, film, advertising and television are part of our
contemporary culture that is extremely
relevant to our life! Therefore I do approve that university should try its best to offer more courses relating to those topics!
Nonetheless, before the university sets the decision, it should consider the following elements prudently. First of all, the scale and financial ability of the school should be taken into account. Offering more courses means more teaching staff and greater
budget for the school, hence if the scale of the school is not large and it has
insufficient finances, the school cannot afford to offer too many extra courses! Secondly, the school ought to put great
emphasis on the need of the students. It had better have students fill out questionnaires to see the
potential demand for those courses. If too few students show affection for those courses, the school should cancel the idea to avoid the waste of teaching staff and resources. In all, a university should set the
appropriate courses according to its own
specific situation!
From the elucidation above, no one can deny the great relevance of the
contemporary culture to our life, but is it really true that it has greater relevance than do arts and literature of the past? I do keep a skeptical point for this assertion! As far as I see, arts and literature, though somewhat more virtual and
abstract than those films and TV programs, do have a enormous
impact on our life! They stem from the observation and
inspiration of life and convey abundant emotions and viewpoints towards life! Thereby, we can pierce through life deeply and seek some spiritual comfort that we can never touch in our real life through enjoying arts and literature! Some of the masterpieces can
inject our mind with a sense of beauty and hope that can
sharpen our thinking capability and help us maintain mentally healthy and joyful! Moreover,
innumerable masterpieces
embody great wisdom towards life, which deserves our learning. Through appreciating diversified arts and literature, we can develop a more
intact and optimistic personality gradually and taste more spice of life! Furthermore, as for college students, the
fantastic and vivid composing skills fused into the works can teach us a great lesson in writing,
drawing and so on! So I do believe arts and literature do not exert less influence on our development than film, television, etc do.
Altogether, the assertions in the topic are unilateral and merely
partially reasonable. We advocate the growing establishment of courses for
contemporary culture, but meantime, we should never abandon arts and literature of the past. Instead, we should also spare no efforts to push those courses.
