CHINA'S non-manufacturing industries expanded at a faster pace in September, after the manufacturing PMI hit a four-month high in the same month, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said yesterday.

The purchasing managers' index in the non-manufacturing sector increased to 61.7 from 60.1 in August, the federation said.

A statement by the federation said that non-manufacturing operations have been growing rapidly, and the gain in September index was partly due to seasonal reasons.

The growth also echoed the government's efforts in investment in service industries, which is in line with the adjustment of the country's economic growth model.

Index numbers above 50 indicate growth and below 50 contraction.

The federation's non-manufacturing PMI is based on data compiled from purchasing executives at 1,191 companies in 20 sectors including building, manufacturing services and consumer services. The figures aren't seasonally adjusted.

A survey by the federation released earlier last week showed that growth in China's manufacturing sector had also speeded up in September.

The purchasing managers' index rose to 53.8 in September from 51.7 in August.

The index has remained above 50, an indication of expansion, for 19 straight months after slowing in late 2008 and early 2009.

China's economic growth cooled down to 10.3 percent in the second quarter from 11.9 percent in the first three months of this year, still above the annual target of 8 percent set by the central government.
