A flash storm that followed tornado warnings in several boroughs powered through New York City Thursday evening, killing at least one person as winds of up to 70 mph knocked down trees, damaged homes and crushed cars, authorities said.
Fallen tree limbs also snarled mass
transit during the evening commute, shutting down Long Island Rail Road service west of Jamaica for a time, while the entire no. 7
subway line stopped rolling for several hours and New Jersey Transit suspended service on some lines. Some roadways were closed to
traffic because of debris, and a woman was killed when a tree toppled onto her
vehicle at the Grand Central Parkway near Jewel Avenue in Queens, authorities said.
The storm also knocked out power to more than 24,000 customers in Queens and 5,100 in Staten Island, said Con Edison. More than 570 costumers were without power in Brooklyn.
The city's 911 switchboards were inundated with calls of injuries, but it was unclear just how many were considered serious, a
spokesman for the Fire Department said. The
spokesman said several firefighters responded to scenes in Queens and Brooklyn where motorists were stuck in their
vehicles after having trees fall on them.
