In recent years, I have got to know nearly a hundred of Chinese people living both in China and other countries. In China, each time when I talk to some Chinese persons I just befriended with, they always give me the impression that I am probably the first foreign friend they acquaint with.
I remember the first time I really met with the Chinese people. I felt somewhat confused because I had no clue about how to respond and what to say to them. I didn't know how to understand their customs and their ways of thinking. All I knew was that they like rice, noodle and Kungfu. Over a period of time, I found our Americans share little in common with the Chinese in the aspects of customs and world outlooks.
My first trip to China was aimed to make money and study Chinese economy. Over a period of time in China, I found more valuable things, and I started to learn more about Chinese culture. Though I dare not say that I am a master about China, I try my best to learn and keep open-minded here.
I choose Qingdao as my favorite Chinese city, because I have many friends here. I met many people in the city, including two persons and one family who have helped me learn a lot about the Chinese culture and this society in the past few years.
Jackie
Jackie, a tall and thin young man from Hubei province, has just graduated from the university and will continue with his graduate study. Since we got to know each other in the summer of 2008, we had been like brothers. Though I myself am a learner, I still like to share with Jackie what I have learned in life. Jackie is warm-hearted and faithful to his friends. Whether in China or in the United States, it's not easy to find such a guy.
The Suns
In 2008, I lived with the Suns as a home stay student. We have kept in touch over the past few years afterward. They have got a son who is of the same age with me. I think the Suns are very earnest and friendly. I mean not only the parents and their son, but also the whole family, including the grandpa, grandma, uncles and aunts. Each time I pay a visit to their house, I will be stuffed with tasty food before I leave. When my father came to travel in Qingdao in 2009, I introduced him to the Suns. When I went back for the summer vocation, the first thing my father said was "Have you called your Chinese parents? Tell them that you've arrived safely".
Having met with so many Chinese people, I have drawn the conclusion—we are all the same. It is our cultures that influence our world outlooks and other views, which make us appear different. I used to assume that it would be impossible for me to find a Chinese who I really adored, understood and could be taken as a true friend. However, after a time, I have learned that I can't judge a person by his appearance or cultural background but should by the content of his character. From my personal experience, the difference of personality is far greater than that of culture. Diversified personalities and characters do exist in different cultural systems, and many people I know in China remind me of the people I have met in the United States.
Though to judge a person by his character not by his appearance and background is a very simple lesson, it is the most important lesson I have learned in China. I thus send gratitude to all the friends I have met in China for what they have done for me.
